Lang downplays reports that he may make bid for governor

Former New Bedford Mayor Scott W. Lang played down a news report Monday that he is considering running for governor in 2014.

Lang, a Democrat, told the State House News Service his decision on whether to enter the race will ultimately depend on the way the field shapes up and whether he feels he can make an impact on the policy issues he cares about.

“There are very few offices that I would run for in the future, and there are just some things I think I could be a lot more effective,” he said in a phone interview, calling the offices of governor and U.S. senator more suited for his goals than the U.S. House, which he said would require him to “be as old as Strom Thurmond” before he gained the clout necessary to bring about change.
